Valve steel is an important branch of heat-resistant steel, and is a special special material for the manufacture of the inlet and exhaust valves of the internal combustion engine. This material is often in the working condition of high temperature of 450~900 and 3000 to 7000kPa, and it will endure high temperature corrosion and erosion of gasoline and diesel fuel and the friction between valve itself and valve seat for a long time. Therefore, the valve material must have sufficient thermal strength, high temperature corrosion resistance, antioxidation, wear resistance and impact resistance at the highest working temperature.
The valve steel is divided into martensitic and austenite type according to the type of valve steel. The common Martensitic Valve Steel has 4Cr9Si2 and 4Cr10Si2Mo steel. 4Cr9Si2 steel is used as the exhaust valve of automobile engine and diesel engine under 700 C. 4Cr10Si2Mo steel can be used as exhaust valve for medium and high load motor and diesel engine at working temperature not more than 750 degrees C. The wider use of austenitic valve steel is 4Cr14Ni14W2Mo steel, which is used for the production of heavy load exhaust valves for internal combustion engines, which are not more than 750 degrees centigrade. Other austenitic valve steels are also 5Cr21Mn9Ni4N and 2Cr21Ni12MnSiN steel.
