Introduction High-temperature structural steel (13CrMo4-4)
The improvement in mechanical properties is due to the addition of Mo and V. These elements stabilize the microstructure of the steel. V offers more improvement than Mo but is more expensive. Maximum use temperature is 400-500 degrees Celcius. Mechanical properties depend both on the temperature and the loading time. Special steels are developed for even higher temperatures (up to 1220 degrees C). the mechanical properties increase with increasing Carbon concentration (Reference DIN 1.7335). Alloyed steels for temperatures up to 500°C.
In addition to high creep strength, other material properties like hardenability, corrosion resistance, and weldability are also important. The relative importance of these properties depends on the specific application. For example, large turbine rotors require steels with good hardenability, whereas power plant tubing and piping must have good weldability. Even so, the alloys used in these different applications employ the same mechanisms to improve creep strength.
