Introduction High Speed Tool Steel (1.3243)
High speed tool steel is used to produce high efficiency cutting tools. Because of its red hardness, high wear resistance and high strength, it is also used for moulds, rollers, high temperature bearings and high temperature springs with high performance requirements. The hardness of high speed tool steel after heat treatment can reach more than HRC63. It can still maintain high hardness at about 600 C, and its toughness, wear resistance and heat resistance are all good. The main alloy elements of the high speed tool steels annealed are tungsten, molybdenum, chromium, vanadium, and some of the high speed tool steels are added to the elements such as cobalt and aluminum.
Application(1.3243)
It is often used in power-saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to the older high-carbon steel tools used extensively through the 1940s in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high-speed steel. At room temperature, in their generally recommended heat treatment, HSS grades generally display high hardness (above Rockwell hardness 60) and abrasion resistance (generally linked to tungsten and vanadium content often used in HSS) compared with common carbon and tool steels.
